live carbon neutral

so, my bunky bought me this great thing called a TerraPass for my car. basically, you calculate how much carbon dioxide your car emits in a year and then give money to this organization that will invest in carbon dioxide reducing technologies and reduce that same amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted from another source. Native Energy also has an offset program available and even has one for offsetting your air travel. how cool is that?

another "try and be quiet while people are doing weird things in a place that you are normally supposed to be quiet" game from our friends across the pacific. in this one, men are sitting in a classroom watching a video of some guy trying to practice english (emphasis on the trying) and they are ordered not to laugh. if they do, they are called out of their seat to get on their knees and get caned. the clip is a little long, you get the point after the first caning or two...

a new feature

a few weeks ago, my internet connection at home was down for about 3 weeks and i couldn't download any podcasts. i know, boo-hoo. the upside was that i was digging much deeper in my i-pod archives than i normally would and have been listening to some stuff that i haven't heard in a while. let me tell you, some of it has not aged well. but some of it really has and i love the feeling of listening to an album that you haven't heard in a while and remembering why you loved it so much way back when. and thus the idea for "what's on lorna's i-pod now?" was born.

i found my self listening to aztec camera's stray album when i was walking the dogs recently. this album really has aged well. i remember getting it during my freshman year at ucla, having been introduced to it by my friend, jason. (wonder what ever happened to him?). it's got a smoky jazz club piano feel to it sometimes, but there are some songs that rock. the title song, stray, is sweet and soulful. notting hill blues and over my head, pure torch songs. how it is, good morning britain and get out of london rock. mick jones from the clash does some guest vocals on britain and has one of the best lines - "don't be too black, don't be too gay; just get a little duller." highly recommended.

a new name?

i'm thinking of renaming the blog. i'm thinking of calling it, "nice turn signal, asshole." or maybe i'll call it, "hang up and drive, bitch." i'm not sure. i seem to say those two phrases an awful lot these days. can you guess why? hint, it may have something to do with the fact that i live in los angeles.

he's playin' organ in heaven now

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060606/ap_on_en_mu/obit_preston

such sad news. billy preston died at age 59. he played with two of my favorite all time musicians: the beatles and aretha franklin. you owe it to yourself to listen to his performance on the aretha franklin "live at the fillmore west" album. you will soon hear yourself echoing aretha's words, "play it, billy."

r.i.p. billy preston. get on back.
